The Talking Book
A page that answers back. A child presses the button in the page, asks their question out loud, and the book answers in plain language at their level. No screen. No cloud round trip.
How it works
Press. The button wakes the chip.
The microphone is dormant until the button is held. No wake word, no ambient listening. Privacy, months of battery, and cheaper hardware from one rule.
Ask. The book answers from the page.
A small model, scoped to the book's own content, answers the questions children actually ask. Outside its scope it says so and points to a grown-up.
Why it works
- Dialogic reading raises vocabulary. Meta-analysis of 16 studies, d = 0.59, strongest at ages 2 to 3. Mol et al., 2008
- Turns matter more than words. Conversational turns, not word counts, predicted language-related brain function in 4 to 6 year olds. Romeo et al., 2018
- Print beats the tablet for toddlers. Parents produced almost twice the dialogic talk with print as with an enhanced e-book. Munzer et al., 2019
The research is about adults talking with children. No trial yet tests an on-device book with preschoolers. We claim the mechanism; the first deployments measure the result.
